  3. 1252 by the Venetians and is surrounded by a
  4. wall. Vegetable oils, soap, and leather are
  5. exported. Heavy fighting took place here
  6. during World War II, after the landing of
  7. German parachutists in May 1941. In 1971 it
  8. was replaced by Iraklion as administrative
  9. capital of Crete.
